KINGSTON, N.Y. — The inaugural TEMPO in the Park World Music Festival, a free family-friendly event, will take place Saturday, July 25, from noon to 8 p.m. at Cornell Park on Wurts Street.
The event is being presented by the TEMPO Performing Arts Center.
The festival will feature internationally touring and local acts presenting music from around the world, according to a release for the event. From noon until dark, Cornell Park will come alive with music, dance, culture and community.
Radio Kingston will host two stages with a dozen bands. The artists will present Mexican Banda, Guinean Afro-beat, Arabic-Yemeni folk, Balkan brass, World-Beat garage jazz and an Irish session on the main stage. A second stage will feature local acts presenting Afro-Cuban drumming, choral pieces from Georgia, Ukraine and the Balkans, Indian classical, Latinx folk, and Old-Time and Cajun fiddling.
The main stage schedule is as follows:
* 1 p.m., O’Sullivan’s March — A quartet featuring accordion, guitar, bazouki and Uilleann pipes playing in the traditional Irish session style.
* 2:05 p.m., Mac’nCheez Balkan PowerTrio — Modeled after the traditional village wedding bands found throughout the southern Balkans, this group features sax, accordion and tapan drum, along with special guest vocalists.
* 3:10 p.m., El Khat — An internationally touring trio with a unique Arabic-Yemeni style and percussive roots inspired by Middle Eastern pop, filtered through a do-it-yourself garage approach.
* 4:15 p.m., Juma Sultan — World-beat jazz presented by the local musician, composer and archivist of Hendrix band fame with his local band of all-stars performing originals and improvisations.
5:20 p.m., Mandingo Ambassadors — The sound of Guinean Afro-Jazz in America, founded in New York City by griot-guitarist Manady Kouyaté, and performing as a full electric band.
6:25 p.m., Banda la Tumbadora — A popular Mexican brass band from Newburgh known for its traditional brass and percussion-heavy banda sound.
The second stage schedule is as follows:
* 12:30 p.m., Afro-Cuban Drumming with Richard Marquez.
* 1:45 p.m., Driftwood Chorus — Polyphonic songs from Eastern Europe and beyond.
* 2:50 p.m., Vinay Desai Duo — Classical Indian Santoor and Tabla.
* 3:55 p.m., Pueblos Tristes.
* 5 p.m., TEMPO Old Time All-Stars.
* 6:05 p.m., Lapin Coquin Cajun.
Attendees can also enjoy food and coffee vendors, an outdoor bar and a children’s zone hosted by MyKingstonKids. Local food vendors on hand will include
Las Camelias Oaxacan Delicacies, Ariana Afghan Feast, Rams Valley Caribbean BBQ, and Stir Up Columbian Coffee Truck. In addition, there will be a beer, wine and cider bar presented by TEMPO Performing Arts Center
The festival is sponsored by Radio Kingston, Arts Mid-Hudson, Ulster County, Mid-Hudson Valley Federal Credit Union, Archtop Fiber, Upstate Curious Team at Compass, Stewart’s Shops, and Chestnut Street Design and Construction.
