UNSOUNDS / TORA, 94U/TORA07
The Amsterdam-based experimental ensemble Futuro Ancestrale is led by Italian sax player, composer, multi-instrumentalist, and the Head of Tora Records, Giuseppe Doronzo, and features British guitarist Andy Moor (of The Ex and Lean Left, and the head of the Unsounds label), American drummer-percussionist Frank Rosaly, and Greek electronics player Yannis Kyriakides (a close collaborator of Moor, who joined the ensemble on its new album). Doronzo wanted Futuro Ancestrale to combine contemporary improvisation with his long-time fascination with non-Western music traditions, and especially with ancestral instruments borrowed from Chinese (the Chinese gourd flute, hulusi), Albanian, or Chadian traditions (the Albanian double flute, cyla dyjare), or the Iranian bagpipe.
Doronzo, Moor, and Rosaly released the ensemble’s self-titled album in 2024 (Clean Feed), where they sought to match «temporal and spatial tyrannies, cultural conventions, and deep-rooted idioms, dissolving into a beguiling trans-dimensional flux during the four post-Gurdjieffian spirituals». The follow-up album, Elsewhen, with Kyriakides on live electronics and sampling, was recorded at Schenk Studio in Amsterdam in February 2025. This album cements Futuro Ancestrale’s aesthetics of evoking a vibrant musical dialogue between histories and cultures, now adding to the dialogue a layer of electronics.
Futuro Ancestrale’s music celebrates the timeless duality of ancient traditions and ceremonies with a spontaneous, punkish, and post-rock modern sound world, with its uncompromising musical language and its unorthodox instrumentation. The music builds a transcendental exotic-hyontic pulse («Eye of the Hurricane»); evokes a shepherd’s eventful journey («Ghostline»); flirts with ancient Apulian pagan-religious prayer, whispered by farmers to the sun before entering the fields («Scindone»); and suggests a punkish Ethio-jazz meets electronics, on «Faló», inspired by the medieval Chadian wind instrument kakaki, used to recall a nocturnal fire rite marking the passage from winter to spring.
The quartet sounds as if it summons ancient spirits, shamans, magicians, and dancers to its futurist, restless, inclusive, and mysterious sound world, suggesting inventive ways to bridge between epochs and topographies. Doronzo was inspired by Argentinian Julio Cortázar’s seminal novel Hoscotch (1963) when he initiated Futuro Ancestrale. Elsewhere sounds as capturing the novel’s surreal, magical realism stream-of-consciousness approach to musical storytelling, blurring the original, familiar meanings with individual, experimental, and disruptive interpretations.
