In a mesmerising evening that wove together the harmonies of two worlds, the Cultural Village Foundation(Katara) hosted a musical performance titled ‘Maqam: A Round Trip Between Doha and Naples’ at the Drama Theatre, Building 16. The concert offered an enchanting dialogue between the soulful spirit of the East and the lyrical elegance of the West — a meeting of traditions where authenticity met innovation in perfect harmony.
The event was graced by the presence of Dr. Khalid bin Ibrahim Al Sulaiti, general manager of Katara; His Excellency Paolo Toschi, ambassador of the Republic of Italy to the State of Qatar; a number of their excellencies ambassadors and members of the diplomatic community; along with a large audience of music lovers and culture enthusiasts from across the world.
The evening opened with a theatrical dialogue that traced the voyage of an Arab artist journeying from Doha to Naples — a symbolic odyssey through sound and story. This artistic narrative intertwined drama and melody to recount the timeless tale of the ‘maqam’, the ancient musical mode born in Mesopotamia, which journeyed across continents and centuries, leaving its imprint on the world’s great musical traditions.
The repertoire unfolded through a series of evocative performances — from the resonant beauty of classical Eastern compositions to the lyrical charm of Italian melodies — culminating in a joint piece that captured the essence of cultural convergence between East and West.
One of the evening’s most touching moments was a tribute to Ziryab, the legendary musician of Al-Andalus, whose composition infused the hall with both melancholy and grace — a reminder that music speaks a universal language beyond borders and words.
In his address, His Excellency Ambassador Paolo Toschi extended his appreciation to Katara and the event’s organizers, commending the exceptional artistry and seamless organisation. He also praised Katara’s pioneering role in fostering cultural dialogue and mutual understanding through the power of music and art.
