VAEMI (Volt Age Electronic Musical Instruments) has announced Synterra, its new standalone bio-interactive generative synthesizer. They say that, bringing bio-interactive and generative synthesis concepts together within a single instrument, Synterra analyzes changing data from plants, fungi, fruits, organic materials, conductive surfaces, light, and human touch to create continuously evolving musical structures.

At the core of Synterra is a system designed not simply to translate physical data into random sound, but to organize unpredictable information into a musically meaningful structure. Resistance variations detected through its probes and changes in light captured by the onboard LDR are analyzed and transformed into events. These events are then processed through an internal quantizer and probability engine, generating notes, rhythmic movement, and multi-layered structures within the selected scale.
At startup, Synterra uses its internal coil to read the electromagnetic field of its surroundings and establish an initial reference. This information influences the system’s initial note distribution and timing behavior, allowing each session to begin in relation to the environment in which the instrument is being used. Even when working with the same source, the resulting musical behavior remains continuously variable and non-repeating.
Synterra provides 8 selectable scales, adjustable polyphony from 1 to 5 voices, and a note range that can extend across up to five octaves. Amount and Sensitivity controls allow the user to shape how strongly incoming data affects the system, influencing event density and the overall activity of the generative process.
The instrument features 9 internal synth patches, combining different approaches including wavetable and FM synthesis, resonant structures, Karplus–Strong physical modelling, drones, percussive synthesis, glitch, and noise-based sound generation. This allows Synterra to function as a completely standalone electronic instrument without requiring an external sound source.
Synterra is not limited to its internal sound engine. Its generative note data can be transmitted via USB MIDI and MIDI OUT to external synthesizers, software instruments, DAWs, and MIDI-to-CV systems. In this configuration, Synterra can operate not only as a standalone synthesizer but also as a generative MIDI source at the center of a larger electronic or modular setup.
External MIDI control provides another level of musical control over the generative system. In MIDI Scale Mode, notes received from an external keyboard, sequencer, or DAW define the tonal material available to Synterra. The instrument continues generating music autonomously, but restricts its output to the incoming set of notes. This allows its generative output to follow the chords and harmonic movement of an existing composition or live performance.
In Full MIDI Mode, the generative system can be bypassed completely, allowing Synterra’s internal synth patches to be played directly over MIDI like a conventional synthesizer.
Synterra also includes a Sample & Hold / Trigger system designed to bring its generative timing into a structured musical environment. In Hold mode, new events and notes are generated only when a manual, external, or MIDI trigger is received. This makes it possible to synchronize the instrument with a DAW, sequencer, modular system, drum machine, or live rhythmic performance while preserving the evolving nature of the generated material.
The instrument can also be used without connecting it to a plant or external object. Its onboard light sensor responds to changes in ambient light and shadow, while a conductive touch area on the front panel allows the performer’s own body resistance to become part of the system. In addition to the supplied crocodile-clip probes, a 3.5 mm sensor input provides further possibilities for alternative sensors and experimental interfaces.
Designed with portability in mind, Synterra can be powered via USB or batteries, allowing it to operate in the studio, on stage, outdoors, in nature, or as part of interactive installations and experimental art projects.

Synterra is available for pre-order now with a 17% discount. The pre-order campaign will end on August 31, 2026, and the first Synterra units will begin shipping during September 2026.
