[Originally published 9/11/26; Updated 9/15/26]: Angine de Poitrine, the French Canadian “microtonal cardboard duo” that commanded the internet’s attention earlier this year and is currently touring the United States, made its U.S. national television debut on Monday night with a performance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
The duo, composed of masked characters Klek de Poitrine (drums) and Khn de Poitrine (double-neck microtonal guitar/microtonal bass guitar, live looping), used the appearance to debut a new song called “Zugzegk.” Not sure how to pronounce that? Neither was Jimmy Fallon.
Prior to the performance, Fallon told the audience that the band had given him the opportunity to interpret the title. “We called and said, ‘Hey, could we have you on the show?’ They don’t really do much press, so it was a big deal for us to get them. They’re gonna perform a new song tonight,” he said, showing the crowd the spelling of the title on a card. “I said, ‘How do I pronounce it?’ And they said, ‘However Jimmy pronounces it will be the name of the song.’”
“I’m honored to be part of it,” Fallon joked. “I can call it whatever I want and that will be the name of the song.” When Fallon finally introduced the performance, he pronounced “Zugzegk” like a guttural “quack” from a duck. So it is written in Poitrine lore…
If you were already familiar with the bizarre duo, you could be forgiven for not realizing this new song was new; it certainly looks and sounds on-brand with the rest of the the act’s growing catalog, with cult-like “triangle” hand-signals kicking things off and the rest of the tune growing from tense, complex microtonal loops. But whether or not you knew Angine de Poitrine’s before this, it was certainly something entirely new for The Tonight Show.

Angine de Poitrine is currently taking stages by storm on its first-ever U.S. tour. The structure of the months-long U.S. trek is indicative of the unique act’s meteoric rise: It overwhelmed festivals like the Montreal International Jazz Festival and Newport Jazz Festival, drawing staggering crowds after originally being scheduled on smaller stages, and updated its initial itinerary of U.S. club dates multiple times before the tour started as demand rapidly outpaced supply.
Klek and Khn made their NYC debut last week with two sold-out nights at Le Poisson Rouge, which fits up to 700 patrons. In November, they’ll return to the Big Apple to perform three more sold-out shows at the 1,800-capacity Brooklyn Steel, with secondary market tickets currently listed well above face value.
