Morgan Wallen’s ‘Last Thing You Need’ has become an instant hit following its release. Fans are already speculating about its connection to Jason and Lucía.
Yesterday, Thursday, September 17, part of the GTA 6 soundtrack was released, although it has not been specified whether these 34 tracks will also be included in the tracklists of the game’s radio stations. In any case, the number of streams for many of these tracks suggests that we’re not just talking about the most anticipated game of the decade, but the most significant entertainment product in a long time. Specifically, one of the first tracks released managed to climb to number one on the world’s most popular streaming platforms.
The song is ‘Last Thing You Need’ by Morgan Wallen. What is likely the most unique song released so far managed to become the most-streamed song in the United States on platforms like iTunes and Amazon Music. There’s no data from Spotify yet, but it’s expected that when it’s released, it will also rank very high in the streaming charts. Meanwhile, the official video on the artist’s channel and Atlantic Records’ channel has already racked up more than 350,000 views on YouTube.
Rockstar’s choice of Wallen doesn’t seem to be a coincidence. A native of Tennessee, he is one of the most popular country artists in North America, with U.S. sales figures comparable to those of world-renowned musicians such as Taylor Swift. Although his image may not seem to have much to do with the state of Florida (Leonida in GTA 6), his personality—reserved yet rebellious—certainly does, as he has been involved in several incidents related to excessive alcohol consumption. Furthermore, even though he is one of the standard-bearers of traditional American music, ‘Last Thing You Need’ partially strays from classic country toward a more pop-oriented, synthesizer-driven sound—something that fits better with the sunny atmosphere of Miami/Vice City.
Along with Wallen, five other tracks have been released, by artists as diverse as Travis Scott and Keith Richards, guitarist for the legendary Rolling Stones.
Meanwhile, because of the theme of Morgan Wallen’s song, fans are beginning to speculate about the relationship between Jason and Lucía. ‘Last Thing You Need’ is about a relationship between two people that isn’t good for either of them, but one they can’t seem to let go of. “Bad for your heart, good for your sheets,” goes the chorus, though there are hints that players will be the ones to decide the nature of the protagonists’ relationship—it could be a romance or simply a friendship.
GTA 6 arrives on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series.
