SocaLabs Identity is a new free, math-formula-based polyphonic Synthesizer plugin for macOS, Linux, and Windows.
The KVR Developer Challenge 2026 has begun. Many developers have created plugins for the annual event. For example, Tilr released TetraOP, a 4-op FM and wavetable synth. SocaLabs, which has released several unique synths in the past, is also part of it.
For the event, SocaLabs has released Identity, a new free Synthesizer plugin with unusual oscillators.
SocaLabs Identity
Identity is a new free Synthesizer plugin for macOS, Linux, and Windows. SocaLabs has its own plugin design, and the developer continues this in Identity. Rather simple and no distracting gimmicks.
It’s also very welcome that he doesn’t use a GUI, which many new developers currently use and that is designed by an AI agent. Uff, finally a bit of a different design.
Identity features two oscillators that are built around the concept of formulas. They are fully programmable oscillators in which you write the waveform as a mathematical expression.
Each oscillator has a dedicated section for this, along with classic controls such as level, pan, tune, detune, spread, and unison. There are also shaper controls such as asymmetric, wave-folding, and phase.
Mathematics and oscillators, I will probably fail at that, since I was never good at this. Besides this, it includes a sub-oscillator and white/pink noise generators that support the formula oscillators. The engine also features an analog-style drift.

From here, it goes into two multi-mode filters with various modes (LP / HP / BP / Notch, 12 & 24 dB/oct), each with classic controls and a dedicated filter envelope.
On the modulation menu, you can find four multi-segment-based LFOs with poly, mono legato, and free retrigger modes plus three ADSR modulation envelopes. Drag-and-drop support makes the connection between modulators and targets easy.
A modulation matrix manages the modulators and provides additional controls, such as curve shapes and bipolar/unipolar modes.
Sound refinements can be done in the multi-FX processor on the second page. It houses 11 reorderable effects, including gate, chorus, distortion, delay, reverb, EQ, filter, and more. They are also modulatable with the internal mod engine.
Further, you can find a built-in arpeggiator, four assignable macro knobs, per-voice vibrato, and MPE support. SocaLabs ships Identity with a wide range of sounds.
SocaLabs has made some fun synths in the past, including some inspired by game consoles. Their new Identity is also a very distinctive-sounding synth plugin with a nice range of sound design features. For a free synth, it offers a lot. Thanks, SocaLabs!
SocaLabs Identity is available now as a free download. It runs as a VST3, AU, LV2, and CLAP plugin on macOS (native Apple Silicon + Intel), Linux, and Windows.
