Cherry Audio releases its first V2 with Memorymode 2, supercharging it with new effects, step sequencers, a new filter mode and a whole extra synthesizer. Is it worth the upgrade?
Back in 2021, Cherry Audio released Memorymode, its take on the Moog Memorymoog analog poly. This has served as Cherry Audio’s flagship product, but with recent releases like Ensoniq ESQ-1, Crumar DS-2 and others all having similar effects sections, the company felt it was time to bring it up to speed. Today it has announced Memorymode 2.
This new release is more than just a brush-up, though. The team put their lab jackets on and went back into the studio to analyze the original, resulting in this new version. Along with the effects section that all the new instruments seem to be getting, this new Moog-alike includes four lanes of touch-oriented modulation, 16 x 4 programmable polyphonic step sequencers and arpeggiators per layer, and additional performance-based automation.
If you noticed “per layer” in that last paragraph, good eye. Yes, the new synth boasts dual-layer architecture with two complete 16-voice polyphonic synthesizer layers or splits per preset, with up to 48 voices per layer via unison stacking. Beefy!
I, for one, am stoked that their take on the Memorymoog has gotten the upgrade treatment, Cherry Audio’s first to get a “2” in the name. I’ve been playing with an advance copy and it sounds incredible. Hopefully the team will continue on updating its deep catalog.

[15 July 2021 written by Robin Vincent] Cherry Audio continues their virtual synthesizer emulation series with the mother of all polysynths – the Moog Memorymoog.
They’ve been doing a decent job of this and Memorymode is no different. Cherry Audio has attempted to replicate the sound and feel of this legendary analogue synthesizer and they used a vintage Memorymoog owned by jazz legend Chick Corea as the basis of their emulation. They’ve done detailed models of the 3-oscillator voice architecture and the famous ladder filter circuit and brought it together with overdrive and drift to keep it sounding like the sometimes unruly beast that we so enjoy.
You have 16 voices to play with, a selectable 12dB or 24dB/octave filter, tempo-synced LFO, detunable unison mode with up to 48 oscillators and an improved arpeggiator. They’ve expanded the modulation section to give you more movement and they’ve added studio-quality effects like phaser, ensemble, delay and reverb.
Of course, you’ve got full MIDI control, comprehensive MPE support for expressive playing and a good-looking interface that magnifies to exactly what you want to see with a single click. And if you want to tone to feel more stable, modern and full of beef, then that’s just a click away.
It sounds pretty great to me. There are 600 presets inside just waiting to sound exactly like you imagine they would. Here’s a useful comparison video.

Cherry Audio has massively increased the price on this one to an eye-watering $39, which is a huge hike over the usual $29, but I’m sure we can cope with it.
The soft synth is available now in AU, VAT, VAT3, AAX and standalone for macOS and Windows.
