Looking to experience some of the best live music Victoria has to offer this month?
The Victoria Conservatory of Music will bring Cheng² Duo with special guest James Campbell to the Alix Goolden Performance Hall on Saturday, October 24th.
The Canadian sibling duo Cheng² Duo, pronounced Cheng squared, features cellist Bryan Cheng alongside pianist Silvie Cheng.
Cheng² Duo has been praised globally as brilliant and absolutely captivating, with musical chemistry that promises to draw listeners in from the first note.
Get Back On Road, Safe & Fast.
“I have had the great privilege of knowing and working with Bryan and Silvie Cheng for nearly ten years and have witnessed their incredible growth and trajectory as artists,” said Mhiran Faraday, director of events and partnerships with Victoria Conservatory of Music.
“I am in awe with both their musicianship and their ability to tell a story and engage the audience within the context of their programming and performance.”
“Adding the inimitable mastery of clarinetist James Campbell into the mix will make for an evening you don’t want to miss!”
Bryan Cheng is the only prizewinner of both the Queen Elisabeth and Geneva International Music Competitions in 40 years.
Together with Silvie, a former Cecilia Concerts Musician-in-Residence and National Arts Club Artist Fellow, the two have cultivated a lifelong musical dialogue, forged in childhood and refined through years of shared artistry.
Since its inception in 2011, the duo has toured extensively across the Americas, Europe, Asia and South Africa.
The duo has four critically acclaimed albums, including Portrait, which was nominated for a 2024 Juno Award in the category of Classical Album of the Year, Small Ensemble, Russian Legends, Violonchelo del fuego, and Violoncelle francais.
Born in Ottawa and Tokyo to Chinese parents, the Conservatory of Music says Bryan and Silvie’s multicultural roots and Canadian upbringing inform their global musical outlook.
They’ll be joined by clarinetist James Campbell for a concert that is sure to charm audiences with artistry, delightful storytelling, and emotional depth.
Campbell is no stranger to performance and accolades himself, and has performed solo and chamber music concerts in 30 countries, has been a soloist with over 60 orchestras and has performed Copland’s Clarinet Concerto four times with Aaron Copland conducting.
He has been awarded a Juno, Canada’s Artist of the Year, the Queen’s Jubilee Medal, and Canada’s highest honour, the Order of Canada.
Tickets for the show are $45 plus fees for adults, and $25 plus fees for youth and students 18 and under. Purchase yours here!
Don’t miss all three of them at Alix Goolden Performance Hall on October 24th!
