There are plenty of concept albums out there. Elaine Walker’s MACROCHIP is something a little harder to categorize. Described by the electronic music pioneer as a “mini-movie album,” the eight-track project blends music and visual storytelling into a series of interconnected sci-fi adventures. Rather than creating songs first and adding visuals later, Walker developed both simultaneously, resulting in what she calls a “Synema Song” – a format where the music, characters, and narrative evolve together as a single work.
Across the album, listeners are introduced to a world of robots, aliens, astronauts, cosmic rescue missions, and alternate realities. Each track functions as its own chapter, blurring the line between electronic music release and science fiction anthology. One of the project’s most distinctive qualities comes from Walker’s use of the Bohlen-Pierce Scale, a rare microtonal tuning system that gives the album its unmistakably otherworldly sound. A longtime pioneer of xenharmonic music, Walker has spent decades exploring alternative tuning systems, and MACROCHIP stands as one of her most ambitious efforts to date.
The visual side of the project is equally intentional. Rather than relying on generative AI, Walker built the album’s cinematic world entirely from licensed, human-created stock footage, carefully editing each scene to match the music and story. For those familiar with her work, MACROCHIP feels like a natural extension of a career spent at the intersection of music, science, technology, and imagination. Part album, part film series, and part science fiction experiment, MACROCHIP is available now and can be streamed below via YouTube.
